Petalos and The Hermit Crab in the Wine Spectator's 2007 Top 100
Wednesday 12/12/2007
Every year, the American periodical Wine Spectator conducts its own world tour of "the most exciting wines", a Top 100 produced after tasting 15,000 wines which is eagerly awaited by wine lovers, as proved by the explosive demand each year for the winning vintage. The top spot in the 2007 ranking has been awarded to the Clos des Papes' Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2005, which takes over from the Italian "Casanova di Neri" 2001 (a Brunello di Montalcino de la Tenuta Nuova). Enthusiasts will be familiar with Ridge, Le vieux Donjon (another Châteauneuf-du-Pape), Antinori, Two Hands, Léoville Las Cases (95/100), Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, Mollydooker, Robert Mondavi, Krug 1996… : there is certainly a rich variety of names in the leader group, but nothing too out of the ordinary. You have to look a little further to find the pinch of salt that gives flavour to this Top 100: in places 84 and 95, you will find the names: The Hermit Crab Marsanne Viognier – one of our favourite "little wines" - and Petalos, our best seller for the last 2 years: a great boost for us at 1855, as we have recognised the potential of this Alvaro Palacios vintage since its early days
