An eternal "Cuvée Grand Siècle"
Friday 22/12/2006
Partially influenced by the quality of the champagne’s vineyards, yet the real style of a House particularly depends on the grape varieties’ and the vintages’ assemblage and the different manipulations of the Pinot Noir’s and the Chardonnay’s juice.
The number four in the Champagne Laurent-Perrier still is among the famoust brands, the last great family-run House, lead-managed by Bernard de Nonancourt.
A man with a bizarre destiny: on May 4th, 1945, he was put into charge to make an inventory of Hitler’s private cellar in Berchtesgaden, where he found several hundreds of boxes of the Champagne Salon 1928, which had been stolen by the occupation troops in Mesnil-Sur-Oger five years ago.
At the end of the war Bernard de Nonancourt revived the family company Laurent-Perrier and inaugurated the new Cuvée Grand siècle in 1957. Up till then, the prestige cuvees were the fruit of one single vintage. With this new one they became the assemblage of three vintages and offered the delicate combination of fineness and power with a nice regularity. Composed of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, today it is elaborated of about twelve crus, all classified…. Sublime.
