The new testament of the gospel

Wednesday 18/10/2006

Situated in the bosom of the magic triangle with its peaks called Pétrus, Gazin and Cheval blanc, the new wine warehouse of l’Evangile (=Gospel) - totally dressed in rose - brings an air of Médoc on the right-bank of the Garonne.

Appeared in the 18th century under the name of Fazilleau, the domain was rechristened rapidly to the “l’Evangile” (=gospel) by a certain Isambert, who had discovered that an ancestor Fazilleau was buried in a chapel “on the Gospel’s side” facing the morning sun…..

Without any doubt the area of l’Evangile is based on a trinity of prestigious soils, summarized the miraculous land of Libourne : the gravel soils of Cheval Blanc, the sandy gravel soils of Gazin and the clay of Pétrus. At the border of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol this complex ground smoothes the climatic randomness and offers the cru this balance, marking it between maturity and freshness.

Since 1999 there are just masters working at this Château of Pomerol. The domains Barons de Rothschild have set a big change in motion with Dominique Befve and Jean-Pascal Vazart, the current technical director.

After being destroyed by the frost of 1956 the vineyards Merlot (65%) and Cabernet Franc (35%) have entirely been replanted. Now they raise new hope after difficult years in the era of Ducasse, the former proprietor.

The arrive of the nobles of Pauillac and the creation of the second wine “Le Blason de l’Evangile” have given new dynamics to the domain, that regains its flattering position as “First Cru of Haut-Pomerol” according to Féret(publishing company). Since 1998 all the vintages present a true regularity and are very pure versions of the new testament of l’Evangile.
