The passionate and sensible man of Romanee Conti

Wednesday 27/09/2006

When Aubert de Vilaine suggested his father going and working with him, at the estate Romanee Conti, which became thus the most famous wine in Burgundy, it had financial problems. This did not matter: passionate of vines work, he joined the estate in 1964 as a grower.

"The success of Grands Crus from Burgundy takes roots in the deep truth they express both for spirit and senses”, Aubert de Vilaine declared, and we cannot forget these lands “benefiting from a potential ever denied”.

Truth and simplicity, the co-president of Romanee Conti does not have ancestral secrets. He is a sensible man and he knows a good Burgundy wine starts with both vines and lands “because there is an outstanding alchemy and the smallest molecule may influence.”

Wise but gambler, Aubert de Vilaine. Using a biological growing for 20 year, this sensible man decided, however, a few years ago to experiment the biodynamic method on Grands Echezeaux and La Tache. He does not approve all the philosophical principles, men are looking for proofs – “We did not really notice advantages on these plots but perhaps a few details are escaping our attention” -.

Aubert de Vilaine has already chosen his guides: his crus before philloxera, which had been “absolute models” for him and this treaty about vines written by his ancestor Duvault-Blochet, which is his bedside book. “With the modern means, we have to be worthy of this past”, our Burgundy knight commands…
