Mouton Rothschild: 150 years old of genius
Tuesday 26/09/2006
Emeric Sauty de Chalon and Michel Hansen, the co-authors of the first book published by Editions 1855, Les Mythes de Bordeaux, called it "the flamboyant artist". A perfect name for the Château Mouton Rothschild of which the bottles are “dressed” by the greatest artists – the famous artists’ labels – and housed since 1964 the museum of “Wine in Arts”.
In 1924, the Baron Philippe de Rothschild inaugurated the first “artist’s label” offering to Jean Carlu the opportunity to realize the first one with the first vintage bottled at the Château. In these days, the initiative provoked vivid feelings in Bordeaux. This is why he experiment had been renewed only in 1945 with the artist Philippe Julian. This was a success.
The 2005 vintage will sign the anniversary of these “artistic labels”. During these 60 years the most famous artists (Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali, Cesar, Miro, Chagall, Picasso…) have illustrated one after the other each mythic cuvee Mouton Rothschild. 60 vintages minus one…
Minus one because the Rothschild family decide to celebrate its 150 years of existence in car Pauillac adorning the anniversary vintage, the 2003 with the purchase act that transformed the Château Brane Mouton into Château Mouton Rothschild forever.
We are in 1853. The artist did not show anything yet, but it already blazes in the Nathaniel de Rothschild eyes: on the label foreground, itch for impressing history.
Homage to the artistic genius of the Rothschild family.
