The Lur-Saluces gold

Friday 15/09/2006

Living among ruins. Château de Fargues is only an historical monument built in 1306. It falls apart. This devastation perfectly contrasts the neighbourhoods, which reflect modernity with new buildings and youth with the green vines of the early harvests that seems to be here to ensure the domain protection.

Reconquest. The Fargues history, Fargues and history : For its 700 years, a new experience presented to it: Alexandre de Lur-Saluces, this great family standard bearer came back on his ancestor’s main preoccupations with the ambition to continue to make the most individualized Sauternes”.

This Sauternes land, The Lur-Saluces, former owners of Filhot, de Malle, Coutet and then Yquem, know each hideaway of it. However, these 15 hectares of vines, which softly incline through the Valley holds dear to the family. Perfect drainage, the Semillon do not fear neither sunstroke nor shipwreck, the surrounding humidity has the talent to create a very aristocratic noble rot!

Great art or nothing. Alexandre de Lur Saluces imposes here the same involvement than he does in Yquem. He aims at hoisting the Château de Fargues into the higher position, even if it means choosing to overlook the second-rate vintages like they already did in 1964, 1972, 1974 and 1992 – they did not release it –. The new Lur-Saluces ambassador only wants to be remembered for the Sauternes with golden robes. Fargues 2005, in the tradition of Fargues 2001 and Fargues 1997, proves it. This proof of excellence is three times less expensive than his mythical neighbour…
