Smith Haut Lafitte 2006: the advantage of great terroirs
Wednesday 11/04/2007
The heavy rains in March, while not enough to build all the soil water reserves back up, have provided enough of a reserve allowing the Smith Haut Lafitte vines in Pessac-Léognan to ripen. The Cathiard family was able to harvest finely ripened grapes in 2006 thanks to the soil’s natural drainage, good exposure and daily pruning. Their white wine should fall somewhere between the “fresh tension of the 2004 vintage and the opulence of their 2005 wines”. The red wine should be full of surprises, as Merlot grapes were particularly “tender and fruity”, and Cabernets Sauvignons were ripe and offered a nice texture.
