Bless the bubbles !
Friday 20/10/2006
The grape harvest of the Champagne concludes doubly positive: 2006 is not only a vintage of “very good quality” but also of abundance. This will satisfy its lovers all over the world whose number has not stopped increasing all the last years.
This week all the vinyards brought in the 13,000 kilos of grapes authorized by the appellation preventing the great champaign houses like Pommery and Veuve Clicquot, who are supplied half by the winemakers, from a possible shortage.
“This good grape harvest comes up to the point comforting the stocks and impelling the general progression of exportations”, specifies l’Union des Maisons de Champagne (U.M.C. = the Union of Champagne Houses).
Last year 307.5 million bottles of champaign were sold all over the world: Great Britain was the first of the French champaign importers with 36 million bottles, followed by the United States (20.6 million) and Germany (11.9 million). But the biggest fan of this pretty blonde bubbles – evidently – is France with the sales of 185 million bottles in 2005.
