The greatest vintage ever seen before

Friday 12/05/2006

Some people are convinced: 2005 is « the greatest vintage ever seen before in Bordeaux. However this cannot be taken out of context; years as perfect as this one have certainly been in the past. The difference is that today modern techniques allow to sublimate what nature does the best, Lucien Guillemet, the Boyd Cantenac and Pouget owner in Margaux reminds us.

But this year, even the people well know for their scepticism dare enthusiasm. « It is very rare is Bordeaux to succeed red wines, white wines and sweet wines. In 2005, the climate has been favourable to the three colour »a professor of oenology explained.

Here the recipe to obtain miraculous grapes… An early drought that reduces the vegetal side of grapes and it obliges its roots to go far in depth in the subsoil in order to quench its thirst.

Fresh nights preserving the fruit balance and the freshness of flavours, warmth aerated to concentrate grapes and a sprinkling of drizzle that can relieve the most fragile skins like women evaporators.

This recipe is quite simple but the combination of these elements is as rare as phenomenal partially explains the gastronomic cost of some tasty morsel in 2005. Untill 320 euros, in futures the bottle of Lafite ou Latour.
Twice this price within two years! Obviously why the greatest Châteux should deprive themselves of selling to the highest bidder, Americans, Russian, Chinese people? The French and the European will be the clever ones and will listen the local adage: « people have to buy the first during the bad year and to choose the others during the great years ».
