Robert Parker: 2005, a unique vintage
Friday 05/05/2006
« I have ever tasted so many young wines that are so outstandingly rich, concentrated, with such a precision and endowed with so many tannins. » According to Parker, 2005 is unique and incomparable. Strength, freshness, fruity, this new vintage gather together all the qualities that are necessary to have an excellent vintage.
"At the beginning of March, when I went to tastings, I felt the same excitation than in 1982. And I wondered if 2005 were better than 2003 and 2000", he wrote.
In 1982, the least successful Médoc appellation was Margaux. On the contrary, this year it is one of the best ones. "Basicly, I have ever tasted so good Margaux", he told. Neverthless the style is different than in 1982, on the exception, perhaps, of the north side where you can find incredibly mature and intense wines.
The Médoc are unique this year. The Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe, are extremely strong with a fruity and an outstanding concentration. They will need time to reveal the harmony kept secret by their strength.
Also a wonderful year for white wines which are dry, refined, with a nice acidity and deeper than the Ocean. Even very young, their mellow brothers remind the magical 2001, for the best ones.
Margaux,Pessac-Léognan, Pomerol, Saint-Emilion : so many appellations that offer so weel-structured wines in 2005 and for Parker they are better than the 2000 vintage : they have a wonderful ageing potential and it will reach more than 25 years…
You have to know that in 2005, the prices of the Grands Crus will be higher than usual. Think « clever » and think about these « speculators' darlings » like Parker called them. This year is shinning by its success number : even among the smallest châteaux, wines are good and prices will stay reasonable compared to the prices proposed by the Grands Châteaux.
Do not hesitate : "It is the best moment to go and look for good Bordeaux wines, the best moment to be a wine amateur", Robert Parker explained with enthusiasm.
