The Lords
Château La Mission Haut-Brion
Classed Growth. A "real" Pessac-Léognan: powerful, concentrated and elegant. A classic.
Château Laville Haut-Brion
Classed Growth. Just like the Mission Haut-Brion, this wine combines with wonder power and elegance. Still very beautiful Pessac, at the top of name.
Château Pape Clément
Classed Growth. Deep, dense, concentrated wines, that should be forgotten in the cellar, and tasted later on a par with the very best wines.
Domaine de Chevalier
Classed Growth. Both the red and the white wines border on perfection. The reds manage to be incredibly elegant yet rich and powerful, the whites are complex with a fabulous length on the finish.
The Mythics
Bahans de Haut-Brion
Second wine of Château Haut-Brion. Wrap red deep, much flesh, elegance and rigour. Very difficult to find.
Château Carbonnieux
Classed Growth. This is one of the great white wines of the appellation. The red wines are also well-known, in particular for their finesse, after a few years of bottle age.
Château de Fieuzal
Classed Growth. This classy wine enjoys a high reputation. The château also produces a classic white wine and an interesting second wine called Abeille de Fieuzal.
Château Haut-Bailly
Classed Growth. This fabulous red is so smooth it is almost creamy. Dark, dense with great length.
Château La Louvière
This well-run domain belongs to the impressive Lurton family. The reds are full-bodied and the whites are pleasantly aromatic, due to a high proportion of the Sauvignon grape.
Château Malartic-Lagravière
Classed Growth. Since this château was purchased by its new owner in 1998, the quality has really taken off. The wines of the domain now fit in perfectly with the classed growth category.
Château Smith-Haut-Lafitte
Classed Growth. The leaps in quality have been outstanding over the last decade. The last vintages have great potential. Definitely should be tasted.
The Reasonablest
Château Bouscaut
Classed Growth. One of the many chateaux that belong to the Lurton family. The white wine is aromatic and powerful, the red wine, with a high proportion of Merlot, shows great elegance.
Château Chantegrive
The white wines produced here, and in particular the Cuvée Caroline, are the ones to look out for. The reds require bottle aging.
Château Latour-Martillac
Classed Growth. A very beautiful success of Pessac-Léognan name. Very round and very suave, very harmonious. Particularly succeeded in 2001.
Château Olivier
Classed Growth. Both the red and the white wines are well-made, and reasonably priced.
