Cahors

(Cahors)
(Cahors)
(Cahors)
AOC South-West

This was Georges Pompidou's favourite wine, the sacristy wine of the Orthodox Church and the wine of the Tsars. Cahors make up some of France's oldest vineyards. Since the Middle Ages people have spoken of its highly concentrated wines, called the black wines of Cahors. The vineyards were reduced to 1% due to terrible attacks of frost in 1956. The area was replanted with Auxerrois, also known as Cot or Malbec, the area's most important vine variety. Cahors wines must be made up of at least 70% Malbec and may also contain Tannat and Merlot.
